Kathleen M. Defever is an Attorney specializing in Insurance Law (for Plaintiffs / Policyholders) and a Public Insurance Adjuster. She was inspired early in life to fight for positive change in society. Her family includes a late Belgian Supreme Court Justice and the highly regarded Mayor of Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Following in her family tradition, Kathleen now serves as a Planning Commissioner in Tiburon, California. She is also President of her local Rotary Club – an organization prioritizing “service above self,” beginning in 2021.
Kathleen spent her formative years in the Midwest, first attending Michigan State University and then DePaul University in Chicago. She was a runway and television fashion model for Elite Model Management in Chicago and for an agency in Sydney, Australia. Upon obtaining her undergraduate degree, she continued her education with DePaul University, at the College of Law. There she won accolades for her advocacy and writing, and interned with the prestigious United States Federal Public Defender’s office in Chicago.
Soon after graduation, she relocated to San Francisco, where she spent several years with a top insurance litigation firm specializing in assisting disability insurance policyholders, and became a Public Insurance Adjuster assisting the victims of house fires. In 2018 she graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Law with a Masters in Insurance Law.
Since 2013, Kathleen has kept an ABA-recognized blog about Insurance, Law, and Society at Misinsured.net. She has been asked to speak about insurance law and the consumer at universities, and she has been published in international law journals and books. Currently, Kathleen is actively working on a book about insurance and investments.
